What Makes a Good Low Calorie Weight Loss Plan?

By definition, to lose weight you have to burn more calories than you consume. Therefore, and this may be splitting hairs, any weight loss program you choose is a low calorie weight loss plan. In making the choice of a diet program, the question then becomes how low a daily calorie count do you want?

At the extreme low calorie end is a class of diets called "very low calorie diets," or VLCD. A VLCD is defined as a diet of 800 calories per day or less, and is primarily for morbidly obese people who wish to lose large amounts of weight as quickly as possible, but in a safe manner. Since a VLCD has the same physiological effect as total starvation, it should only be undertaken with a doctor's supervision.

Some of you reading this who are not obese may be thinking, "I can live on 800 calories a day. Bring it on!" A lot of us who are overweight consider calories as "the enemy." The truth is, calories are not our enemies. Believe it or not calories are our friends. They supply the necessary nutrition and energy our body needs. Restricting your calorie intake without regard to the types of calories you are eliminating could cause some serious health issues. For example, if the types of calories you eliminated happened to be rich in calcium, it could eventually lead to bone loss and fracture. We just need to pick a diet program that moderately reduces calories rather than severely restricting them.

A good diet plan is one that advocates a slow, steady weight loss of up to 2 pounds per week. That is a net calorie reduction of 7,000 calories per week. Put another way, if you reduce your current calorie intake by 1,000 calories per day you will lose 2 pounds per week. Even though 1,000 calories per day may sound like a lot, when you consider a Big Mac and fries contains 1,200 calories you can see how it wouldn't be hard to cut down your calorie consumption by that amount.

Eating properly for our lifestyle and goals is the advice of many nutrition experts. A good diet plan is not a temporary fix; it is a permanent solution that you can stick to. The leading advice tells us that a good diet plan is to eat appropriate amounts of foods as well the proper kinds. Eat well, watch your calories, and you will enjoy healthy benefits.
