Celebrities and Body Image

There is talk about Jessica Simpson doing a reality show about body image and the definition of what people think is beautiful. I'm not sure what I think of this. In theory, it seems like a good idea to go around the country and find out how body image differs from place to place. But I believe celebrities are the last people I would listen to regarding anything about body image.

I was really impressed with Jessica Simpson with how she first handled the media when there was so much talk about her recent weight gain. For one, I did not think she looked fat. She looked like she was at a healthy weight for her height. Definitely the clothes she was wearing did not flatter her figure but if she had put on five or ten pounds, big deal. We all go through that. And two, according to US magazine Jessica herself even said, "Curves are better," Simpson added. "I don't get the whole rail thing. It's not good for your heart, it's not good for your mind; it's emotionally destructive, it really is."

But then Simpson did something that really bothered me; she lost the weight!! What kind of message does that send to young girls struggling with body image and seeing pictures of size 0 celebrities on the cover of every magazine. What a great message that would have been if Simpson had said, "I'm happy and healthy at this weight and I'm going to stay this way."

I really admire Kelly Clarkson who has said in the past that she loves her curves and continues to stay at her current weight despite constant criticism from the media. I remember hearing her say one time that if someone tells her to lose 10 pounds, she'll just gain 10 pounds to piss them off. Love that!

Then we have Melissa Joan Hart posing on People magazine showing off her newly slimmed body after having a baby. Am I supposed to be in awe of you? Admire you? No way! What about the regular mom who works full-time, raises her kids with her husband, manages a busy, household schedule, cooks and cleans and is able to shed the weight on her own time in a healthy way. That is someone I admire. Celebrities have it easier because of the following reasons:

- They have the money to hire personal trainers, nutritionists and personal chefs.
- They can hire a nanny to look after their kids while working out with their personal trainer.
- They have hidden agendas in their motivation. In Melissa Joan Hart's case, I'm sure she's hoping something (a job) will come from the People magazine's article.
- They have the media! If I had camera's following me everywhere I go I think I would watch what I eat a little more carefully.
- They get paid. Kirstie Alley and Valerie Bertinelli both have contracts with Jenny Craig. And I betcha they aren't doing it for free.
- A little nip and tuck. I'm just curious; I would love to know how many celebrities go under the knife for some minor procedures to help them slim down.
